Understanding your vehicle's Limited slip differential oil and the importance of its maintenance

The limited slip differential is a set of gears that lets your vehicle's drive wheels turn at different speeds to prevent binding in turns. It includes components to limit wheelspin when one of the wheels completely loses traction, allowing the wheel with traction to propel the vehicle. On AWD, RWD and 4x4 vehicles having a differential housing apart from the transaxle, limited-slip differential oil provides specific friction properties and heat dissipation for internal components. Over time, the oil can degrade and should be replaced periodically, more frequently if the vehicle is driven under severe conditions. It is also important to check the differential housing for fluid leaks to repair if necessary.
