Understanding your vehicle's Brake drums & linings and the importance of its maintenance

When the brake pedal is depressed, pistons press the brake shoe linings against the inside surfaces of brake drums that rotate with the wheels. This creates friction, slowing down and stopping the vehicle. Over time, the brake shoe lining will wear away. If not maintained, this eventually results in the the harder brake shoe backings grinding into the brake drum, degrading braking performance and creating the need to replace or remanufacture the drum. To ensure reliable braking performance and prevent unnecessary wear, brake linings should be inspected, adjusted, and replaced when necessary.
